Bernick, Carol Executive Chairman of the Board
Alberto-Culver Company
Melrose Park, IL

Experience: Carol Bernick is Executive Chairman of Alberto-Culver Company, a $1.4 billion global manufacturer of personal care and household products including Alberto VO5, TRESemme, St. Ives, Nexxus, Motions, Mrs. Dash and Static Guard, the latter two brands which she created. Bernick became president of Alberto-Culver’s U.S. consumer products in 1994, and worldwide consumer products in 2002. In those roles, she reenergized the consumer businesses, dramatically increasing sales growth rates and profit margins while instituting a nationally-recognized cultural overhaul profiled in the June, 2001 Harvard Business Review. When she was elected chairman in 2004, the company was operating both its consumer products unit and Sally Beauty Company -- which had grown into the world’s largest distributor of professional beauty products. In 2006, Bernick oversaw the process that separated the two units, establishing Sally as a free-standing public company. She is a board member for Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, Tulane University (she’s a 1974 graduate) and the Dean’s Advisory Board for the Kellogg School of Management. In 2005 she was named National Working Mother of the Year by the Moms in Business Network. Bernick has three children.
