President and Chairwoman Fundación Andrónico Luksic Abaroa Santiago Centro, Chile Experience: Maria Paola Luksic is president of the Andrónico Luksic Abaroa Foundation, a private family nonprofit organization that seeks to promote education, cultural development, and positive social change in order to improve the quality of people's lives in Chile. The foundation focuses its activities in small rural communities by supporting educational projects for economically disadvantaged and socially at-risk youth. It awards 100 scholarships per year for high school, technical, and university studies. It has also implemented innovative programs such as the CyberTrain, which travels around the north of Chile introducing children to technology through its specially adapted train cars equipped with computers and wide-band internet. Luksic is a member of the Luksic Group, one of Chile's largest business conglomerates with interests in mining, banking, and industry. Its sphere of influence in the country allows it to serve as a springboard for economic and social development through private initiatives addressing educational, environmental, and social needs. Luksic studied forestry management at the University of Chile. She serves on the board of directors of many of the Luksic Group companies. |
